Why West Australian Garlic Beats Imported, Every Time
Fresh, local, and full of flavour — here's why your garlic should come from WA soil.
When I speak with our customers, we often get asked: “What’s the difference between locally grown garlic and the cheaper imported kind at the supermarket?”
My answer is — a lot.
When you choose garlic grown right here in Western Australia, you’re not just buying a bulb. You’re supporting your health, your community, and a more sustainable way of living. Here’s why West Australian garlic should always be your first pick:
1. It’s Fresher — And You Can Taste It
Most imported garlic has travelled thousands of kilometres and spent weeks (or even months) in cold storage before it hits the shelves. By then, it’s often dry, rubbery, or already sprouting.
Our WA-grown garlic is harvested in season, air-cured naturally, and sold direct to customers while it’s still full of flavour and nutrients. When you cook with local garlic, you taste the difference — sharper, sweeter, and more aromatic.
2. No Nasty Chemicals — Just Clean, Local Garlic
Imported garlic doesn’t just travel far — it also has to go through harsh chemical treatments to meet Australian quarantine standards. In Western Australia, strict biosecurity laws require imported garlic to be fumigated with methyl bromide, a toxic chemical used to kill pests. While it does the job, it also affects the garlic’s quality, shelf life, and nutritional value.
To improve appearance, many imported bulbs are also bleached to make them look bright white and uniform — but that visual polish comes at the cost of flavour and freshness.
In fact, we’ve had a few first-time customers ask why our garlic is more yellow in colour. The answer?
“That’s the colour garlic that’s alive is supposed to be.”
Fresh, untreated garlic has a natural cream or golden hue — it’s a sign it hasn’t been bleached or gassed. It’s real, living food, just as nature intended.
At Munns & Sons Farm, we grow garlic the clean, natural way — no fumigants, no artificial treatments, and absolutely no bleach.
3. It’s Better for Your Health
Fresh, chemical-free garlic contains more allicin — the compound responsible for garlic’s powerful health benefits. From supporting your immune system to reducing inflammation and improving heart health, garlic is a nutritional powerhouse — but only when it’s grown and stored properly.
Local garlic that hasn’t been chemically treated or over-processed means more of the good stuff stays intact.
4. You’re Supporting Local Families, Not Overseas Corporations
When you choose local garlic, you’re supporting WA farmers who genuinely care about quality, sustainability, and community. Every bulb you buy helps keep small family farms like ours thriving — and keeps your dollars circulating within the local economy.
At Munns & Sons, we’re proud to be a family-run farm, and every order truly means the world to us.
5. You Know Where It Comes From
With imported garlic, it’s often unclear where it was grown, how it was treated, or what kind of farming practices were used. Some of it comes from countries with lower agricultural and labour standards, and that lack of transparency can be concerning.
When you buy from us, you know exactly where your garlic comes from — grown in the sunshine and soils of our small farm north of Perth.
We believe in full transparency and share our farming journey openly. You can follow us on Instagram (@munnsandsonsfarm) or Facebook (@munnsandsonsfarm) to see exactly how we grow, harvest, and care for our garlic — from paddock to pantry.
We’re always happy to answer questions, share what we’ve learned, and connect with our community.
